Zimbabwe is set to hold its first general election in 2023, the first since the historic 2018 elections as the first after the end of Robert Mugabe‘s 37–year rule. This election will be held to elect the President and members of the Parliament of Zimbabwe. It is expected to be a highly contested election between the ruling ZANU–PF party and the opposition Citizens Convergence for Change (CCC). The 2023 Zimbabwean general election will be the sixth election to be held since the country gained independence in 1980.

2023 general election will be held under a new constitution approved in 2013, which grants citizens the right to vote and stand in elections, as well as other fundamental rights. Zimbabwe’s electoral body, the Election Commission (ZEC) will be responsible for conducting the election. The ZEC is an independent body that oversees the conduct of all elections in the country and is responsible for the registration of eligible voters, the printing of ballot papers, and the counting of votes.

Main contestants of Zimbabwe’s 2018 general elections

2023 Zimbabwean general election will also be the first election since the introduction of a biometric voter registration system. This system will allow for the verification of voters’ identities through the use of fingerprints and other biometric data. This system will help to ensure that only eligible voters cast their ballots and that their votes are counted accurately. The political landscape in Zimbabwe is likely to be highly contested in 2023. The ruling ZANU–PF party, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is expected to face a strong challenge from the opposition CCC, led by Nelson Chamisa.

MDC Alliance, now CCC won the majority of the seats in the 2018 elections, but the ZANU–PF party was able to form a government due to the backing of the military. The 2023 general election will also be the first election since the introduction of a new law that allows for the recall of MPs.

A law was introduced in 2020 and allows MPs to be recalled by their constituents if they fail to meet their promises or fail to represent their constituents adequately. This could lead to a more competitive election as MPs will be held more accountable for their actions. The 2023 Zimbabwean general election is expected to be a highly contested election between the ruling ZANU–PF party and the opposition CCC. 

Elections will be held under a new constitution and will be the first election since the introduction of a biometric voter registration system.
